Treatment Philosophy

"The chances of long-term recovery greatly improve when we treat the underlying neurobiology of addiction first." — David Smith, MD

Addiction Is a Brain Disease

Addiction is a real disease that requires medical attention. The chronic abuse of alcohol, cocaine, crack, opiates, or methamphetamines causes biochemical changes in the brain. These changes in brain chemistry play a significant role in the physical symptoms of substance dependence, including cravings (the irresistible urge to use) and withdrawal (uncomfortable physical symptoms when you stop using).

Our Philosophy of Treatment

Our treatment philosophy is unique in the recovery community. Each day, our clinical team combines science with compassion to address a wide spectrum of patient needs. We understand that substance dependence is complex, with a variety of components — neurological, genetic, environmental, social, and cultural. That's why the physicians at PROMETA Center® Inc. medical practices design treatment programs that target not only the biochemical effects of substance abuse, but the psychosocial and nutritional aspects as well.

PROMETA Center medical practices offer physician-supervised treatments, in addition to ongoing counseling and psychological support. For instance, the PROMETA® Treatment Program— which only we and other select physician practices are able to offer — is a treatment for alcohol, cocaine, and methamphetamine addiction, supervised by physicians and available on an outpatient basis. It is designed to integrate seamlessly with more traditional behavioral therapies, to ensure continuity of care and produce the best possible long-term outcomes for our patients.
